Steven Gallop has been a principal artist for OPERA AUSTRALIA over many years, his early roles including Theseus in A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAMHerman Ortel in DER MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG,  The Mandarin in TURANDOTMontano in OTELLOSwallow in PETER GRIMESDon Fernando in FIDELIO and Ribbling in UN BALLO IN MASCHERA.

More recently his roles for OPERA AUSTRALIA include The Bonze in MADAM BUTTERFLY, Angelotti in TOSCA, Wurm in LUISA MILLER and Bartolo in THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO and, in 2023, Basilio in THE BARBER OF SEVILLE.  Of his performances of Sarastro in the THE MAGIC FLUTE  in 2014 the CANBERRA CRITICS’ CIRCLE wrote, …equally thrilling was Steven Gallop’s towering Sarastro… Gallop commanded the stage on every appearance.  And of his Nourabad in the company’s 2016 season of THE PEARLFISHERS, SIMON PARRIS: MAN IN CHAIR reviewed,  Of the four leads, the stand out is Steven Gallop in the featured role of Nourabad. Gallop has a masterfully assured stage presence., while the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD wrote, it was a luxury to cast as fine a singer as Steven Gallop as Nourabad

He made his debut, in 2013, with STATE OPERA OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA as the Marquis of Calatrava in LA FORZA DEL DESTINO, subsequently appearing as The Bonze in MADAM BUTTERFLY and the Commendatore in DON GIOVANNI.

For VICTORIAN OPERA he has appeared as the Commendatore in DON GIOVANNI,  Ariodate in Handel’s XERXES, and Achilla in JULIUS CAESARSarastro in THE MAGIC FLUTE, and Pheobus in JS Bach’s DER STREIT ZWISCHEN PHEOBUS UND PAN.

Gallop is frequently engaged by MELBOURNE OPERA, since 2008 having appeared as The Bonze in MADAM BUTTERLY, as Georgio in I PURITANIMephistopheles in FAUSTColline in LA BOHEME, and Rocco in FIDELIOHis performances for the company in  2015 of Caspar in DER FREISCHUTZ, received a review from the AUSTRALIAN BOOK REVIEW saying, Gallop dominated the stage whenever he appeared, and thrilled and chilled with his powerful voice and dynamic acting.  His appearances for the company in 2018 included GREENROOM AWARD nominated performances in the role of King Marke in TRISTAN UND ISOLDESIMON PARRIS MAN IN A CHAIR reviewing, Gallop’s bass is in stellar form; controlled and unwavering, its dark lustre in attractive contrast to the lead pair., while CONCERTONET wrote, ... Steven Gallop’s King Marke… strongly delivered and well-rounded portrayal… commanding stage presence… Mr Gallop… galvanising as the bereft King., while of his Daland in THE FLYING DUTCHMAN in 2019 SIMON PARRIS: MAN IN A CHAIR reviewed saying, Steven Gallop, a singer who repeatedly demonstrates his inestimable value, is in stellar form again…

He returned to MELBOURNE OPERA for the role of Fafner in DAS RHEINGOLD during 2021 and for Hunding in DIE WALKÜRE in 2022, OPERA MAGAZINE writing of his performance, Steven Gallop’s menacing, deep-voiced Hunding was an expert portrayal and of his return to the role of Fafner in the company’s performance of SIEGFRIED also during 2022, ARTS HUB reviewed with, Gallop was magnificent in stature and mien … His voice was as commanding as his physicality.  He returned to these roles, and appeared as Hagen in GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG in the company’s production of the complete cycle of DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN in 2023, AUSTRALIAN ARTS REVIEW writing, … a formidable showing as Hagen … brilliant casting., and CLASSIC MELBOURNE saying, Gallop’s voice was thrilling in its immense power.

Gallop has also enjoyed considerable success on the international operatic stage appearing regularly for the WIENER VOLKSOPER and NEUE OPER WIEN and in 2000, appearing as the Hotel Manager in Adés’ POWDER HER FACE for NIMROD OPERA in Odense, a role he was subsequently engaged to sing in Chicago, Zagreb, Tel Aviv, Winterthur, Vienna, Naples and Rome and for OPERA NANTES.

He has sung the role of Dr. Anthony Carroll in Nigel Osborne’s THE PIANO TUNER in performances at the ROYAL OPERA COVENT GARDEN, was engaged  by WELSH NATIONAL OPERA for Varlaam and Nikitish in BORIS GODUNOV and as Don Fernando  in FIDELIO under the baton of Carlo Rizzi.

Other international engagements include Swallow in the Chilean premiere of PETER GRIMES at the TEATRO MUNICIPALE in Santiago and Mephistopheles in FAUST during 2010 and Sarastro in THE MAGIC FLUTE in 2017 both for EUGENE OPERA in the USA.
